Activity #11

Artwrk is made during a specific period and culture. Artwork designed during their periods are distinct from others and are visual in the work. A period is the time during which is was made.Edward Steichen's, Scarlet Poppy painted in 1920 on oil on canvas during the 20th century the Modern Period. Modern Period is characterized by a time of rapid change and growth in society. This takes place between 1800 and 1950.Steichen is German so the culture could be German although he lived in America.

Edward Steichen also painted The Sunflower in 1920 on tempera and oil on canvas.
Being the paintings are by the same artist and the same period it was also mad during the modern period. It was made during the Modern Period so the painting may be post-impressionism which just means the artist came after impressionism. The culture could also be German. Both paintings are by the same artist and during the same time period so their are similarities.

Activity #10-Mediums and Techniques

Edward Steichen
Scarlet Poppy
1920
oil on canvas

There are many mediums applied to this painting. The artist used oil on canvas for this painting but there are other mediums used to describe this work such as the thin paint with hidden brush strokes. The image of the Scarlet Poppy is the most important visual in the painting showing the viewer's eye why the painting was named after the flower. Of course the viewer can tell the art was painted from looking at the piece. Using primary colors that also compliment each other being opposite of the color wheel. Emphasis means that our attention is drawn more to certain parts of a composition than to others. Edward Steichen uses emphasis for the flower using a brighter red to create light and dark values. Thin paint is used however, if you address the picture with your eyes and not your hands then you will see rough patches from small brush strokes. The surface of the painting has its own actual texture.

Edward Steichen
The Sunflower
1920
tempera and oil on canvas

Different mediums are used to contribute to this painting. Tempera and oil on canvas are mediums used. Thin hidden brush strokes are applied. The surface and the visual texture are both smoothed. The variety of shapes and colors are creating interest to the viewers eye and the compostion of the painting is unified. There is not one important image in the painting. Steichen uses primary and secondary colors. This work is painted. The qualities enhance the overall visual impact of the work using variety. Mediums are important for a work of art.

Activity #9: Write About It!

The camera came about 30 years before the Civil War in 1839. The appearance of visual art would be affected by the new invention. Aristocracy and wealthy merchant’s class would give artist portraits to paint. Newspapers and journals depended on the more readily camera which could capture events as it happened. The salon, King and Queen, and the academy dictates no longer had ties to artist. Before cameras as the middle class became wealthier, artists were hired. The 19th century Industrial Revolution was a new art movement. Modernism a new period had a new movement called Impressionism. Impressionist stopped the usual way of painting which was making sketches, going to the studio and painting. Based on themes such as classical, religious, portraiture, and commemorating important events. Portraits before were painted smoothly with hidden brush strokes. Impressionist painted broken brush strokes on the canvas changing the medium. Portraits were often replaced by genre scenes of normal people doing everyday things because of the camera. Post impressionism was created after another group of artist in the 19th century. Cezanne one of the Post Impressionist artists developed a thought to create portraits with block-like brushstrokes. Another artist, Gogh, was interested in color as an expressive tool. Using colors opposite of the color wheel for complimenting. Photography was able to record and remember "actual" World Events. Artists are able to discover new techniques because photography made it possible to freely explore.

Activity #7 Write about it

The exhibition theme presents stories and histories. The six pieces in the exhibition all create a sense of community and cultural memory. Each of the six pieces have come from roots to tell a story in history. History is a story about the past. The photograph Venus and Adonis, artist Titian, 1554, oil on canvas is the story of a goddess (Venus) trying to restrain her lover (Adonis). The design element balance is used in the photo to attract viewer’s eye. Cleopatra created by William Wetmore Story in 1869 using marble, tells the story and history of Cleopatra, the last Macedonian ruler of Egypt. The sculpture is her meditating her suicide. Story used the theme for his work famous or infamous. Adam and little Eve created in 1921 by Paul Klee on watercolor and transferred printing ink on paper. Showing a story of Eve remaining little but coming out of Adam’s rib. Using emphasis and subordination to draw viewer’s attention to Adam and little Eve. Jacob Lawrence’s, The Shoemaker, on watercolor and gouache on paper in 1945, shows more of a history of a working-class labor. With gigantic hands, there is a lot of emphasis and subordination along with asymmetrical balance. Street Story quilt created in 1985 on oil, felt-tip pen, dyed fabric, and sequins on canvas, sewn to quilted fabric, by Faith Ringgold shows survival and redemption of an apartment in Harlem. This piece is different from the others because it’s a quilt the texture is effected and there is unity and variety. Jeffery Daniels in 1986 created Nessus and Dejanira on oil on canvas. This painting is Nessus was killed by Hercules because he tried to rape Nessus’s bride chosen because it stood out to me and message being sent. The themes and purposes I chose were stories and histories. Each piece will make a viewer think but also understand as it did to me.
