Activity #9: Write About It!
The camera came about 30 years before the Civil War in 1839. The appearance of visual art would be affected by the new invention. Aristocracy and wealthy merchant’s class would give artist portraits to paint. Newspapers and journals depended on the more readily camera which could capture events as it happened. The salon, King and Queen, and the academy dictates no longer had ties to artist. Before cameras as the middle class became wealthier, artists were hired. The 19th century Industrial Revolution was a new art movement. Modernism a new period had a new movement called Impressionism. Impressionist stopped the usual way of painting which was making sketches, going to the studio and painting. Based on themes such as classical, religious, portraiture, and commemorating important events. Portraits before were painted smoothly with hidden brush strokes. Impressionist painted broken brush strokes on the canvas changing the medium. Portraits were often replaced by genre scenes of normal people doing everyday things because of the camera. Post impressionism was created after another group of artist in the 19th century. Cezanne one of the Post Impressionist artists developed a thought to create portraits with block-like brushstrokes. Another artist, Gogh, was interested in color as an expressive tool. Using colors opposite of the color wheel for complimenting. Photography was able to record and remember "actual" World Events. Artists are able to discover new techniques because photography made it possible to freely explore.
